Traffic Violations

NYC Traffic Violations

Moving violations in the five boroughs are heard at the DMV Traffic Violations Bureau (TVB), where plea bargaining is limited. We defend speeding, red-light, and other NYC moving violations.

Overview

What you need to know about NYC Traffic Violations.

The basics, what we do, and the issues we see most.

How are NYC traffic tickets different from the rest of New York?

Quick Answer

NYC moving violations are heard at the DMV Traffic Violations Bureau (TVB), an administrative tribunal where plea bargaining is generally not available. Cases are decided by an administrative law judge after a hearing. Because reductions are limited, contesting the ticket on the merits is often the main path to avoiding points.

Frequently asked

Questions clients ask first.

Direct answers from the attorney who handles these matters.

Most asked

Can I plea bargain a ticket in NYC?

Generally no. The DMV Traffic Violations Bureau does not allow plea bargaining the way local courts do, so cases are usually decided after a hearing on the merits. That makes preparation and cross-examination of the officer especially important.

Question 2

What happens if I lose at the TVB?

If the judge finds you guilty, points and fines apply, but you may appeal the decision to the DMV Appeals Board within the required time. We can review whether an appeal is appropriate in your case.
